Workshop Overview
Join us at South Huntington Library for a free, hands-on workshop series. The workshops are funded by Grant Recipient Galina Carroll—reviving the timeless art of mending and up-cycling. During the sessions, you will learn traditional Japanese Boro and Sashiko stitching, transform old garments into wearable art. Minimum sewing experience, creativity and willingness and as a results, you will make something beautiful.

Workshop 1: Darning with Simple Stitching
First, introduction to the basic stitches and mending techniques.
Next, learning of artistic design process with simple stitch patterns
After that, hands-on practice to enhance garments with creative stitch patterns.
Finally, art Inspiration provided through sample swatches
Materials include: large eye blunt needles, large eye sewing sharp needles, large eye long (1.5-2)” long embroidery needles, scissors, embroidery thread, ruler, tailor chalk or marking pencil, pen.
Workshop 2: Advanced Patching and Stitching Techniques
To begin with, exploring intricate stitch patterns and their practical applications.
In addition, learning fabric patching methods to repair and enhance worn-out clothing.
Moreover, experimenting with aesthetic stitching techniques to make repairs visually appealing.
Materials include: large eye sewing sharp needles, large eye long embroidery needle (1.5-2)”, scraps of fabric for patches, embroidery thread, pins, scissors, ruler, tailor chalk or marking pencil, pen.
Workshop 3: Transforming Old Sweater into New Hat
First, an introduction to pattern-making and garment redesign techniques.
Then, Step-by-step guidance on reshaping and repurposing old sweater.
Consequently, hands-on work to craft simple yet stylish hat from up-cycled fabrics.
Materials include: old damaged sweater for making a hat, large eye sewing sharp needles, embroidery thread, pins, scissors, pins, paper for making pattern, scissors, tailor chalk or marking pencil, measurement tape, pen or sharpie.
Workshop 4: Finalizing and Embellishing New Creations
To start, refining individual projects with advanced stitch patterns.
Furthermore, adding final embellishments to personalize up-cycled garments.
Finally, encouraging participants to showcase their work and inspire others.
Materials include: large eye sewing sharp needles, embroidery thread, scissors, pen and projects for final finishes.
